Back to the Future.  An historical look at Florida's transportation past, Florida DOT's vision for the future and how politics can stop traffic.  Plus, federal level developments.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

  • Russell “Rusty” Roberts has specialized in transportation related policy issues in both the public and private sector for nearly four decades.  He served for 18 years as Chief of Staff for former House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman, Congressman John Mica of Orlando, and he was previously Chief of Staff for Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Miami. He began his congressional service in 1981 as the South Florida District Director for U.S. Senator Paula Hawkins.
  • From 2013 to 2020 he served as Vice President of Government Affairs for Brightline Trains Florida, America’s only privately funded and operated high speed passenger train which in 2023 will commence service between Miami and Orlando.  Before joining Brightline Mr. Roberts was Managing Director of the Transportation and Infrastructure Practice at BGR Government Affairs, a top ten Washington DC consulting firm founded by Governor Haley Barbour.
  • In May of 2021, Roberts was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis to the Florida Transportation Commission, a nine-member statewide commission whose mission is to provide leadership in meeting Florida's transportation needs through policy guidance on issues of statewide importance and by maintaining oversight and public accountability for the Department of Transportation and other statutorily specified transportation authorities.  On January 14, 2022, he was reappointed.  He recently joined High Speed Rail Alliance Board of Directors.  The Alliance is based out of Chicago and has been around since the mid 90’s.
