SPEAKER TOPIC

Florida's Changing Environment & Marineland's Role As A Snapshot  --

How the University of Florida's Whitney Laboratory is solving tomorrow's health challenges through the cutting edge research of today.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

  • Dr. Martindale, Professor in the Department of Biology, has broad training in integrative biology but became interested in experimental embryology as an undergraduate at the New College in Sarasota, Fla.
  • After completing his PhD in Austin TX, he trained as a postdoc at Harvard Medical School, taught medical school in the Pritzker School of Medicine at the Univ. of Chicago, and was recruited to the Univ. of Hawaii for 14 years as the Director of the Kewalo Marine Lab.
  • Dr. Martindale joined the University of Florida in 2012.  He has published more than 235 papers on a wide variety of topics in some 15 animal phyla, including co-authoring two important genome papers of basally branching metazoans (the anthozoan cnidarian Nematostella vectensis and the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi) and was the cofounding editor of the open-access journal EvoDevo.
  • He is particularly interested in the relationship of development to regenerative biology, the role of the cleavage program on the origin of spatial organization during the early developmental period, the cellular and molecular basis for animal symbiosis, and engineering cnidarian cells to understand the mechanisms of biomineralization.
